Our Getting to Know Grindstone Series – Meet Nicolaas

How did you find your way into UX/UI design, and what drew you to the discipline?

I started out in graphic design and branding, but over time, I got more interested in how people actually use websites and digital products. UX/UI felt like the perfect mix of creativity and problem-solving

What does good user experience mean beyond “looking good”?

For me, good UX is when something just feels easy to use. Users shouldn’t have to think too hard or figure things out. Everything should feel natural and straightforward.

How do UX and brand strategy intersect on real-world projects?

A brand isn’t just visuals; it’s the full experience. The way a website works, communicates, and guides users says a lot about the brand itself.

What common UX mistakes do you see on business websites?

Usually cluttered layouts, confusing navigation, and trying to do too much at once. A lot of websites also forget how important mobile usability is.

How do you balance creativity with usability and performance?

I try to make sure the creative side supports the experience instead of getting in the way of it. Something can look great while still being simple, fast, and easy to use.

What role does data play in your design decisions?

Data helps back up decisions. It’s useful for spotting patterns, seeing where users struggle, and understanding what’s actually working.

How do you design for both users and business objectives?

I think the two go hand in hand. If users have a smooth experience and can find what they need quickly, it usually leads to better business results anyway.

What trends in UX/UI are actually worth paying attention to?

Accessibility, performance, and cleaner user flows. I think trends that improve usability are always more valuable than trends that are purely visual.

How do you approach accessibility and inclusive design?

I try to consider it from the beginning rather than treating it like an add-on later. Things like readability, contrast, and responsive layouts make a big difference.

How does running influence your mindset and work ethic?

Running taught me a lot about consistency. You don’t improve overnight, it’s about showing up regularly and putting in the work.

What parallels do you see between endurance sports and design work?

Both are very iterative. You adjust, improve, and keep refining over time. Patience and consistency matter more than rushing the process.

How do you handle feedback and iteration during the design process?

I actually enjoy the iteration process. Feedback usually helps uncover better solutions, so I try to stay open and focus on improving the end result.

What excites you most about the future of digital experiences?

Probably how much more personalised and intuitive experiences are becoming, especially when technology can simplify things instead of making them more complicated.

What advice would you give businesses investing in UX for the first time?

Focus on the user first. A lot of businesses jump straight into visuals or trends, but clarity and usability are what really make a difference

What makes a Grindstone UX project different from others?

There’s a strong focus on combining strategy, branding, and usability. It’s not just about making something look good. It’s about creating something that works properly and feels aligned with the brand.
