Slipper day at work

Why Are We Wearing Slippers?

Calling on ALL South African Businesses – Big or Small

You have the power to make a real difference in the lives of children battling cancer. We’re calling on every office, café, restaurant, hotel, shop, and organisation to step up and join us in taking part in Slipper Day.

Here’s how your business can help

Buy R20 stickers for your whole team – available at Wimpy, Dis-Chem, Pick n Pay, The Crazy Store, ToysRUs, Krispy Kreme, Hush Puppies, or online at Reach For A Dream – it’s a small contribution with a big impact.
Encourage your staff to wear slippers on 30th May to show support and spread awareness.
Challenge other businesses to join in and help create a town-wide movement.

Whether you run a small family-owned shop or a large company, your participation sends a powerful message of hope to the children who are still fighting.

Why Slipper Day Matters

The Grindstone team wearing slippers for Slipper Day 2024

Slipper Day is more than just a fun excuse to wear your fluffiest footwear to work. It’s a powerful show of solidarity with children who are fighting the toughest battles of their lives. By donning a pair of slippers and buying a R20 sticker, you’re helping make real dreams come true for children facing life-threatening illnesses.

This heartfelt initiative is led by the Reach For A Dream Foundation, an organisation that runs entirely on the kindness of donors and the support of the public. For decades, they’ve brought light into the darkest of times. Because when you’re fighting for your life, having your dream come true gives strength and hope. And it matters more than we’ll ever truly know.

Mossel Bay’s Young Warriors

Our town has witnessed the resilience of several young heroes:

Stehan, a six-year-old from Dana Bay, who has been courageously battling cancer. The community previously organised a hike on the St Blaize Trail to raise funds for his treatment.

Payton, a five-year-old diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, who had her dream realised when she became a princess for a day, riding a white horse at Outeniqua Moon in Mossel Bay.

Zoë, who faced significant health challenges but found joy when the Reach For A Dream Foundation fulfilled her heartfelt wish of a playhouse, bringing light during a challenging time.

Alba, my own daughter, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2017, and recently reached complete remission. Her dream was to find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and Reach For A Dream made it happen with flying colours. Today, Alba’s story is proof that dreams can give children the hope and strength they need to fight through their toughest battles.

Calling On All Businesses

As stakeholders in our community’s well-being, we’re asking businesses to join us in participating in Slipper Day by purchasing stickers for your teams and encouraging them to wear slippers on the 30th May.

Why This Matters to Us

At Grindstone and the Earth Legacy Foundation, we’ve witnessed firsthand the impact collective efforts can have. And Slipper Day is deeply personal for us. With my daughter having fought cancer from the age of four, and won, we are very invested in spreading awareness and hope. Many of our team members are registered stem cell donors through DKMS and regular blood donors when eligible. We believe that stepping up for our children, whether through science, kindness, or something as simple as wearing slippers, is a responsibility we all share.

Our work in sustainability and community development has taught us a lot about resilience and optimism. When we show up for those in need, we build a stronger, more compassionate future. Supporting Slipper Day is one more way we choose to do just that.

Join Us in Making a Difference – No Business Too Small to Help

Slipper Day is an opportunity to show that South African businesses stands together for our children. Let’s flood the country with slippers, raise vital funds, and remind these brave young warriors that they are not alone.

Get your stickers today and be part of something truly meaningful.
